Study of a Fig Tree, John Singer Sargent
The more I think about the way the aviators interact with dragons who are not their own the more I love this series. Jane Roland handles everyone like they’re small children, even Excidium, who is at least sixty years older than her. Laurence is all politeness and ‘they’re fellow soldiers as much as the men’ and when Berkley greets Temeraire after they return from China like he’s a favourite nephew or something? And I love it so much, this series is so very much ‘found family’ and sometimes I forget how great this all is.
“‘Where shall I begin?’ he asked, but did not immediately hear the answer. He looked down, his fingers caught on the delicate pages of the book, and he traced the embossed lines of the heavy cover, leather stamped with gilt. It was the same book under his hands, with the salt wind in his face, and Temeraire at his side; nothing had changed outwardly, and yet he felt as wholly altered as if he had been reborn, since the last time he had set foot upon the deck of a ship. It seemed that a tide, coming in high and fast, had swept clean the sand. ‘Laurence?’ Temeraire said. ‘Would you prefer another?’ ‘No, my dear,’ Laurence said. ‘This will do very well.’”— Naomi Novik, Victory of Eagles
